Overview
26"x19"x17" Painted Steel Solar Flare, Robot Dreams and Twisted Pair all started from the same piece of steel—an 8” diameter, 1” thick steel tube. In each piece, I have tried to retain some part of the essential form of the tube while reshaping it in ways that seem contrary to the original shape either by reforming the steel into flat plates (Solar Flare) or by reshaping the 1” thickness into legs for a sense of animation (Robot Dreams) or into arms that twist out of the body of the form (Twisted Pair).
It is interesting to hear reactions to these pieces. Robot Dreams often carries the label “spooky” while Twisted Pair seems to have a “calming” affect. Solar Flare has the most visible energy of the three but, despite its apparent energy, actually sits more in a controlled, quiet, arrogance.
I have a fourth piece in this group which is not yet complete. It will mimic Robot Dreams in its animation but will enlarge itself with a greater emotional character.
All three pieces came from the notion of energy that originates from within. Solar Flare would not do this if it were not for its “weight.” Robot Dreams would not do this if it were not for its “lightness” (even though it is actually quite heavy). Twisted Pair would not do this if it were not for its sense of holding onto itself. But, these are my thoughts and what is more meaningful is to see what emerges from other’s observations and thoughts.
