Quantum Physical Paintings by Mauricio Arcesio Sculptures by Tom Yody June 26-July 29, 2008 Gallery hours 11-6 Tue-Sat, 12-4 Sun Opening and Artists' Reception - June 26, 6-9 PM
In the new exhibit opening on Alberta Street's Last Thursday (June 26, 6-9 PM), two artists interpret mathematics and physical science.
Mauricio Arcesio
• Mauricio Arcesio finds images and stories in numbers. The fluid, organic lines that make up the shape and contour of numbers suggest creative energy, such as the flight of a seagull or the movement of an aquatic creature. At times, the curved or straight lines of these numbers form a void that brings us into a realm of infinite possibilities and propel us into the unknown. Numbers are powerful symbols through which we all can journey into our own imaginary fairy tales.
Arcesio was born in Colombia, South America, and for the past four years has lived in Oregon. He is permanently represented by Onda Gallery and has shown in two-person and group shows over the past year. In December, 2007, he participated in the International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Florence, Italy, where he had the opportunity to showcase his paintings and be part of a unique artistic experience with fellow artists from around the world.
Tom Yody
• In his long career since receiving his MFA from the University of Cincinnati in 1970, Tom Yody has produced a significant body of work consisting of drawings, paintings, sculptures, wall reliefs and installations, and has exhibited throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. His last show at Onda was a presentation of drawings inspired by the visionary scientific work of Nikola Tesla.
Yody's intellectual and artistic pursuit drives him to define the underlying structure of the natural world, and he has created this current group of sculptures to show its complex interconnections. This work flows from the pieces exhibited at Confluence I and Confluence II, at Alexander Gallery, Clackamas Community College, and the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center respectively. Yody is currently artist in residence at Monarch Sculpture Park, Tenino, Washington.
By now, you've undoubtedly received the news that Onda Gallery is opening a second location in Lake Oswego. If not, let us know and we'll send you the invitation to the grand opening party on June 28. Please welcome Chelsea Benedict, director of the Lake Oswego Onda Gallery. Two galleries unified with a new logo will present an even more comprehensive program of fine art and fair trade crafts.
